Epoxy Grout vs Standard Grout: Which One Should Your Shower Have?

October 10, 2026

If you’re getting your shower regrouted, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is which type of grout goes in. The difference between epoxy grout and standard cement grout isn’t just about price. It’s about how long the result lasts, how well it resists water, and whether you’ll be calling a specialist again in five years or fifteen.

At Mr Grout, we’ve been completing shower grout replacements across Brisbane and the Gold Coast for over 27 years. We use epoxy grout on almost every wet area job. Here’s why, and how to decide which product is right for your shower.

What Is Standard Cement Grout?

Standard cement grout is the most commonly used grout product in residential tiling across Australia. It’s made from a mixture of cement, sand, and water. When it cures, it forms a rigid, porous material that fills the joints between tiles.

Cement grout is easy to work with, comes in a wide range of colours, and is significantly cheaper per square metre than epoxy grout. For many applications — particularly dry areas like feature walls, living spaces, and low-moisture environments — it’s a perfectly adequate product.

The problem with cement grout in a wet area like a shower is its porosity. Cement grout absorbs water. In a bathroom where the grout is exposed to moisture multiple times every day, that water absorption creates a cycle of saturation and partial drying that progressively degrades the grout’s structure. Mould finds its way into the pores and begins breaking down the binders from within. Over time — typically between 5 and 10 years in a Queensland shower — cement grout deteriorates to the point where it can no longer perform its waterproofing function.

What Is Epoxy Grout?

Epoxy grout is a two-component product made from epoxy resin and a hardener. When the two components are mixed, they undergo a chemical reaction that produces an extremely hard, dense, non-porous material. Unlike cement grout, epoxy grout does not absorb water.

Because it’s non-porous, epoxy grout:

  • Does not absorb water or moisture from shower use
  • Does not harbour mould in the same way as cement grout, because mould cannot penetrate a non-porous surface
  • Maintains its colour stability significantly better over time, because the pigments are locked into the epoxy matrix rather than sitting in a porous substrate that can stain
  • Maintains its structural integrity for significantly longer than cement grout in wet area applications
  • Resists household cleaning chemicals without degrading

The tradeoff is cost and workability. Epoxy grout costs more per square metre than cement grout. And it’s significantly more demanding to apply correctly. It has a limited working time, must be mixed precisely, applied at the right temperature, and cleaned from tile faces before it sets — because epoxy grout that sets on a tile face is extremely difficult to remove without damaging the tile surface.

These workability demands are exactly why professional application matters. Our shower grout repair team applies epoxy grout on a daily basis and has the technique, tools, and product knowledge to deliver a consistent, clean finish every time.

Side-by-Side Comparison: Epoxy vs Cement Grout in Showers

Water absorption: Cement grout is porous and absorbs water with every shower use. Epoxy grout is non-porous and does not absorb water.

Mould resistance: Cement grout provides an environment where mould can penetrate and grow within the grout body. Epoxy grout’s non-porous surface significantly limits mould’s ability to penetrate, making it far more resistant.

Colour stability: Cement grout stains and discolours over time, particularly in lighter shades. Epoxy grout maintains consistent colour for significantly longer because the pigmentation is chemically locked in.

Durability in wet areas: Standard cement grout in a Queensland shower typically needs attention within 5 to 10 years. Properly installed epoxy grout can last 15 years or more in the same environment.

Cost: Cement grout costs less per square metre of material. Epoxy grout costs more. Over a 15-year period, however, the total cost of two or three cement grout replacements often exceeds the cost of one quality epoxy grout installation.

Application difficulty: Cement grout is straightforward to apply and forgiving of minor timing errors. Epoxy grout requires precision and experience. DIY epoxy application almost always produces a substandard result.

Why We Recommend Epoxy for All Shower Applications

The case for epoxy grout in a shower is straightforward. A shower is a high-moisture environment. The grout in a shower needs to perform a waterproofing function, not just fill the gaps between tiles. Using a porous material for waterproofing in a wet area is a fundamental mismatch between product and application.

Standard cement grout in a shower will degrade. The question is how fast. In Queensland’s humidity, the answer is faster than most homeowners expect. When cement grout degrades, it allows water into the tile system. That water causes adhesive breakdown, tile delamination, mould growth in wall cavities, and eventually structural damage that is significantly more expensive to repair than the original grout job.

Epoxy grout eliminates the fundamental problem. By using a non-porous material in the joint, you stop water at the surface. The shower functions the way it should. The grout lasts significantly longer. And our grout replacement in Brisbane and grout replacement on the Gold Coast jobs that use epoxy come with a warranty of up to 5 years — a warranty we can only offer because we have complete confidence in the material.

When Cement Grout Is Acceptable

We’re not saying cement grout is always the wrong choice. For dry areas — hallway tiles, kitchen splashbacks away from the sink, bathroom floors that don’t receive direct water spray — cement grout performs perfectly well and doesn’t present the same waterproofing risks.

But in the shower recess itself — floor and walls — epoxy grout is the right product for the application. If a tradesperson quotes you a shower regrout using standard cement grout, it’s worth asking why. Cement grout in a shower is cheaper upfront and easier to apply, but it will need replacing sooner, and the water damage it allows in the meantime can be expensive.

Colour Selection with Epoxy Grout

One of the advantages of modern epoxy grout is the colour range available. It’s no longer limited to a handful of white and grey shades. Our team carries a comprehensive colour palette, and when we provide your quote, we include the palette so you can choose the shade that works best with your tiles.

Because epoxy grout doesn’t stain or discolour the way cement grout does, the colour you choose stays consistent over the life of the grout. Light colours — which can be problematic with cement grout because they show staining readily — remain clean-looking for significantly longer with epoxy. Our real estate grout repairs team particularly values this for rental properties and pre-sale preparation, where a fresh, consistent finish matters for presentation.

Mr Grout’s 5-Year Epoxy Warranty

We back every epoxy grout job with a warranty of up to 5 years on materials and workmanship. This warranty covers the grout itself and the application — if the epoxy grout fails within the warranty period due to product or application fault, we’ll fix it.

This warranty isn’t something we could offer with standard cement grout. Cement grout in a shower will inevitably deteriorate over time regardless of the quality of application. Epoxy grout, properly installed, holds up long enough for a meaningful warranty to be worth offering.

The warranty is also your assurance that we’re doing the job right. We can’t afford to warrant work that’s done poorly. Every job our team completes — whether it’s a grout removal in Brisbane or a full shower regrout on the Gold Coast — follows the same professional process: complete grout removal, joint preparation, epoxy application, and silicone sealing at all movement zones.
