Movement Zones: The Part of the Floor Most People Miss
The most critical area on any shower floor is the junction between the floor tiles and the wall tiles — and the area immediately around the floor waste fitting. These are movement joints. They experience more relative movement than any other part of the shower and must never be filled with rigid grout.
The correct material for movement joints is flexible silicone sealant. However, in many showers — particularly those installed before modern tiling standards were well understood, or those that have been DIY-maintained — you’ll find rigid grout filling these zones. That grout cracks, opens, and creates the primary entry point for water.

Water from every shower flows directly toward the waste — concentrating water contact right at this joint. The waste fitting also moves slightly as the floor is used, creating mechanical stress on any rigid grout applied directly to it.
Professional shower floor regrouting always addresses the waste surround specifically, using silicone to seal the flexible joint between the waste fitting body and the surrounding tile. If this joint is in grout, it needs to be removed and replaced with silicone as part of any floor regrout job.
